Feline Heartworm Prevention

Feline Heartworm Preventative

by Dr. Sue A. Whitman, D.V.M.

A brief note from Dr. Sue about the feline heartworm preventative

Most people know about heartworm disease because it has been so well publicized in the doggie kingdom. But it is a problem in cats as well, and until this year vets had nothing available to prevent the disease. As in dogs, heartworms are carried by mosquitoes to the cat. It cannot be transmitted from cat to cat. But, with the bite of one mosquito that has fed previously on an infected dog or cat, your cat can get heartworm disease. Treatment in the cat is often fatal, so prevention is the key. Ask your veterinarian about giving your cat a chewable tablet once a month as a treat - it is well accepted by cats and very easy to give the preventative tablet!
